What is Custom Mouthguards?
Custom mouthguards are professionally fitted protective appliances designed to accurately cover the teeth and provide a higher level of protection and comfort compared to over-the-counter alternatives. They are used in sport to reduce the risk of dental injury, and may also be recommended to protect teeth from the effects of grinding or clenching (bruxism). At Primary Dental, custom mouthguards are fabricated from clinical impressions to ensure a precise, comfortable fit tailored to your individual oral anatomy.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

FAQs
What is the difference between a chemist mouthguard and a custom-fitted mouthguard from a dentist?
Mouthguards available from a chemist or sporting goods store are generally either stock mouthguards, which come in a fixed shape and are worn as-is, or boil-and-bite mouthguards, which are softened in hot water and moulded around the teeth. While these options are convenient and lower cost, they are not fabricated to the precise dimensions of your individual teeth and jaw. A custom-fitted mouthguard made by a dental professional is fabricated from clinical impressions or digital scans of your actual teeth. This allows it to fit securely, provide appropriate coverage and thickness for impact absorption, and remain in place without needing to be held by biting down. Custom mouthguards also use higher-grade dental materials and can offer improved comfort, retention, durability, breathing, and speech during sport. The Australian Dental Association recommends custom-fitted mouthguards made by a dental professional as the most effective option for protecting teeth during sport, particularly for contact or collision sports.
How long does a custom mouthguard last?
Mouthguards experience wear with regular use and will need replacement over time. For children and teenagers whose mouths are still developing, more frequent replacement may be needed as their dentition changes. Your dental team will advise on when a new mouthguard is recommended.
How do I care for my mouthguard?
Rinse your mouthguard before and after each use. Clean it with a soft brush and cool water, and store it in a ventilated case away from heat. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or hot environments, which can distort the material. Bring your mouthguard to dental appointments so your team can check its condition.
Are custom mouthguards available for children?
Yes. Custom-fitted mouthguards are available for children and are particularly recommended for those participating in sport. Dental injuries during childhood can have lasting consequences on developing teeth. A well-fitted mouthguard provides important protection and is more likely to be worn consistently due to its comfortable fit.
Is a custom mouthguard covered by private health insurance?
Coverage for custom mouthguards varies between health funds and policy levels. Many extras policies include some level of benefit for custom mouthguards under general or preventive dental. It is recommended that you check directly with your health insurer prior to your appointment to understand your entitlements.
