Dental Crowns And Bridges
What is Dental Crowns And Bridges?
Dental crowns and bridges are fixed dental restorations used to repair damaged teeth or replace missing teeth. A dental crown (sometimes called a tooth cap) covers and strengthens a weakened, broken, or heavily restored tooth. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring to neighbouring teeth or, in some cases, dental implants. At Primary Dental, crowns and bridges are provided following clinical assessment and personalised treatment planning to support chewing function, appearance, and long-term oral health.

What to expect
1. Assessment and treatment planning
A dental practitioner will assess the tooth/teeth and discuss whether a crown, bridge, or another option (such as a filling, implant or denture) is recommended. X-rays may be taken to assess tooth structure, infection risk, and gum health.
2. Tooth preparation and impressions
If a crown or bridge is recommended, the tooth/teeth are prepared to support the restoration. Impressions may be taken using traditional methods or digital scanning, depending on the centre and clinical requirements, so the restoration can be custom-made to suit your bite, shape and tooth colour.
3. Temporary crown/bridge (if required)
A temporary restoration may be placed to protect the tooth and maintain appearance and function while the final crown or bridge is being made.
4. Final placement and review
At a follow-up visit, the final crown or bridge is fitted, adjusted for comfort and bite alignment, and then secured in place. Aftercare advice and ongoing review guidance will be provided.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

FAQs
When does a tooth need a crown instead of a filling?
If a tooth has a large filling or has lost a significant amount of tooth structure, a crown may be recommended to strengthen and protect the tooth. A dental practitioner will assess the tooth and explain which option is most appropriate.
Do crowns require the tooth to be shaved down?
Crowns usually require reshaping of the tooth so the restoration can fit securely. The amount of reshaping depends on the tooth, the material selected, and clinical needs. This will be explained prior to treatment.
How many appointments are needed for a crown or bridge?
In many cases, crowns and bridges require two appointments: one for preparation and impressions, and one for fitting the final restoration. Timeframes may vary depending on the restoration type and clinical needs.
Can I get a crown after root canal treatment?
Yes. Crowns are commonly recommended after root canal treatment to protect the tooth and reduce the risk of fracture, particularly for back teeth that experience higher chewing forces.
Bridge vs denture: what’s the difference?
A bridge is fixed in place and supported by adjacent teeth or implants. A denture is removable. Suitability depends on oral health, the number of missing teeth, and long-term treatment goals.
Will I feel sensitivity after treatment?
Some sensitivity or discomfort can occur after crown or bridge preparation and placement. This often settles, however if it persists or worsens, follow-up assessment is recommended.
How do I care for crowns and bridges?
Good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups are important. Brushing twice daily, flossing (including around bridges), and attending routine reviews can help maintain the health of the tooth and gums supporting the restoration.
