What is Dental Fillings?
Dental fillings are used to restore teeth affected by decay, cracks, or minor damage. A filling helps rebuild the tooth’s shape and function, while supporting long-term oral health. Dental decay may not always cause pain in the early stages, which is why regular check-ups are important. At Primary Dental, fillings are provided following a clinical assessment to determine the most suitable treatment and material based on the size and location of the cavity, bite forces, and individual needs.

What to expect
1. Examination and diagnosis
A dental practitioner will assess the tooth and may recommend X-rays to confirm the extent of decay or damage, including areas not visible on the surface.
2. Treatment planning and material selection
The most appropriate filling option will be discussed (such as tooth-coloured composite or other restoration types), depending on clinical findings and your preferences.
3. Removal of decay and placement of the filling
The affected area is cleaned and restored with a filling material, shaped to match the natural tooth and ensure proper bite function.
4. Aftercare and ongoing maintenance
You’ll receive guidance on caring for your filling, managing any sensitivity, and preventing future decay through home care and regular reviews.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. FAQs
How do I know if I need a filling?
Some cavities cause symptoms such as sensitivity, toothache, or pain when eating. However, early decay may not cause discomfort. A clinical examination and X-rays can help detect cavities early.
Are tooth-coloured fillings a good option?
Tooth-coloured composite fillings are commonly used and designed to blend with natural teeth. They bond to the tooth surface and may allow a more conservative approach in many cases. Suitability depends on the location of the cavity and bite forces.
Is getting a filling painful?
Local anaesthetic is commonly used to support comfort during the procedure. Some sensitivity after treatment can occur but usually settles. If discomfort persists, follow-up assessment is recommended.
How long do dental fillings last?
Filling longevity varies depending on the material used, size of the filling, bite forces, oral hygiene, and habits such as grinding. Regular dental reviews help monitor fillings over time.
Can I eat after getting a filling?
Your dental practitioner will provide guidance based on the material used and whether anaesthetic was provided. In general, it may be recommended to wait until numbness has worn off to avoid accidentally biting your cheek or tongue.
Can fillings crack or break?
Yes. Fillings can wear or chip over time, especially with heavy bite pressure or teeth grinding. If you clench or grind your teeth, a mouthguard may be recommended to protect teeth and restorations.
