What is Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made porcelain or composite shells bonded to the front surface of teeth to improve their appearance, including colour, shape, size, and minor spacing concerns. The simplest way to understand how a veneer works is to think of it like a false fingernail. A precisely crafted covering is placed over the natural tooth surface, improving its shape, colour, or size without removing the tooth itself. The natural tooth remains intact underneath, and the veneer is custom-made to blend with the surrounding teeth.

At Primary Dental, veneer treatment is provided following a comprehensive assessment of tooth health, gum condition, bite, and individual goals to confirm clinical suitability and support a result that is both aesthetically appropriate and long lasting. Veneers may address concerns such as tooth discolouration, chipping, uneven shape, or minor spacing, and are only recommended where the underlying teeth and gums are in good health.

Porcelain or ceramic veeners

Porcelain or ceramic veneers are thin shells attached to the front of teeth to improve their appearance by making them look more aligned and covering imperfections.

They are custom-made, durable, and natural-looking. To fit the veneers, some enamel must be removed, which can be invasive and may not be ideal for long-term dental health. A dentist’s consultation is necessary to determine if veneers are suitable for you.

Composite veneers

Composite veneers are made from a material similar to dental fillings and are custom-shaded to match your teeth. They are a more affordable option compared to porcelain or ceramic veneers but typically don’t last as long.

Composite veneers are applied directly to the tooth, requiring fewer visits and lower costs. Flexible payment options are available to make the treatment more affordable, with eligibility criteria applying.

What to expect

1. Consultation and suitability assessment

A dental professional will assess your teeth, gum health, bite, and overall oral health. The treatment process, preparation requirements, material options, and expected outcome are discussed in detail, along with any clinically appropriate alternatives.

2. Tooth preparation

In most cases, a small amount of enamel is removed from the front surface of the tooth to allow the veneer to sit naturally without adding bulk. Impressions or digital scans are taken to guide the fabrication of your custom veneers.

3. Temporary veneers (where applicable)

Temporary veneers may be placed while your permanent veneers are being fabricated. These protect the prepared tooth surface and give you a clear indication of the final appearance.

4. Veneer fitting and bonding

Your veneers are assessed for fit, colour, and shape before being permanently bonded to the tooth surfaces. Final adjustments are made to ensure comfort and correct bite alignment.

5. Review and aftercare

A follow-up appointment may be scheduled to check how the veneers are settling. Good oral hygiene and regular dental reviews are important to maintain the health and longevity of your veneers.
