What is Gum Disease Treatment?
Gum disease (also known as periodontal disease) is an inflammatory condition affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It commonly begins as gingivitis (early-stage gum inflammation) and can progress to periodontitis if left untreated. Symptoms may include bleeding gums, swelling, bad breath, or gum recession. Gum disease treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, removing harmful plaque and calculus (tartar), and supporting long-term gum health. At Primary Dental, treatment is provided following clinical assessment and tailored care planning.

What to expect
1. Gum assessment and diagnosis
A dental practitioner will assess gum health, checking for bleeding, inflammation, gum recession and periodontal pocketing. Measurements and X-rays may be recommended to determine severity.
2. Professional cleaning and treatment planning
Depending on gum condition, treatment may include a professional scale and clean and targeted cleaning below the gumline. A personalised plan will be discussed based on clinical findings.
3. Gum disease treatment (deep cleaning if required)
For more advanced gum disease, deep cleaning (periodontal debridement) may be recommended to remove plaque and calculus build-up from around the roots of teeth.
4. Ongoing care and maintenance
Follow-up appointments may be recommended to review healing. Ongoing maintenance and home care guidance support long-term gum stability and reduce recurrence risk.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

FAQs
Is bleeding when brushing normal?
Occasional bleeding may occur, but regular bleeding is often a sign of gum inflammation or gum disease. A dental assessment can help identify the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.
Can gum disease be cured?
Early-stage gum disease (gingivitis) may be reversed with treatment and improved home care. More advanced gum disease (periodontitis) cannot always be fully reversed, but it can often be managed and stabilised with ongoing treatment and maintenance.
What happens if gum disease is left untreated?
Without treatment, gum disease may progress and lead to gum recession and bone loss around teeth, persistent infection, loose teeth and tooth loss, ongoing bad breath, and difficulty chewing. Early assessment and treatment may help stabilise gum health and reduce long-term complications.
What is a deep clean for gums?
A deep clean (periodontal debridement) involves removing plaque and calculus from below the gumline, particularly around tooth roots. It is recommended for patients with gum pockets or more advanced gum disease.
Does gum disease cause bad breath?
Yes. Gum disease can contribute to persistent bad breath due to bacteria and inflammation. Treating the underlying cause can help improve symptoms.
Can smoking affect gum disease?
Yes. Smoking (and vaping) can increase the risk of gum disease and may reduce healing. A dental practitioner can provide tailored advice to support gum health and reduce complications.
