What is Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic treatment, is a dental procedure used to manage infection or damage within the dental pulp of a tooth. The pulp is the soft tissue at the centre of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed as a result of deep decay, a crack in the tooth, or trauma, treatment may be needed to remove the infected tissue, clean and seal the canal system, and preserve the natural tooth. At Primary Dental, root canal treatment is performed following a thorough clinical assessment to confirm diagnosis and treatment appropriateness, with a focus on patient comfort, clear communication, and long-term oral health.

What to expect
1. Assessment and diagnosis
A dental professional will assess your symptoms, review your dental and medical history, and take X-rays to evaluate the extent of infection or damage. A diagnosis is confirmed before any treatment is recommended.
2. Treatment planning
The treatment process is explained in detail, including the estimated number of appointments, the approach to managing comfort during the procedure, and what to expect during recovery.
3. Root canal procedure
Local anaesthetic is applied to numb the area before treatment begins. The infected or inflamed pulp is carefully removed, the root canal system is cleaned, shaped, and disinfected, and the canals are sealed to prevent re-infection.
4. Tooth restoration
Following root canal treatment, the tooth will require restoration to protect its structure and restore function. A crown is often recommended for molar and premolar teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, as these teeth can become more susceptible to fracture over time without adequate protection.
5. Follow-up and monitoring
Follow-up appointments allow your dental team to monitor healing and assess the outcome of treatment. Ongoing dental reviews and good oral hygiene are important to the long-term health of the treated tooth.

FAQs
Is root canal treatment painful?
Root canal treatment is performed under local anaesthetic, which numbs the area so the procedure can be carried out comfortably. Many patients report that treatment is no more uncomfortable than having a filling placed. Some soreness in the days following treatment is normal and typically settles with appropriate aftercare.
How many appointments will I need?
The number of appointments depends on the complexity of the case and the severity of infection. Some root canal treatments can be completed in a single visit, while others may require two or more appointments. Your dentist will advise on what to expect for your specific situation.
What happens if I do not have root canal treatment?
If infection within a tooth is left untreated, it may spread to surrounding bone and tissue, potentially leading to a dental abscess, worsening pain, or tooth loss. Prompt treatment is important to prevent the infection from progressing.
How long can a root canal treated tooth last?
With appropriate restoration and good oral hygiene, a tooth that has been root canal treated may last for many years. Regular dental reviews, professional cleaning, and maintaining the integrity of the restoration are all important factors in long-term outcomes.
Is root canal treatment covered by private health insurance?
Root canal treatment is generally classified as a major dental procedure under private health insurance policies. Coverage and out-of-pocket costs vary between funds and policy levels. It is recommended that you confirm your entitlements with your health insurer prior to commencing treatment.
