What is Tooth Extraction?
Tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jaw. Preserving natural teeth is always the preferred clinical approach, and your dental professional will explore all available options to save the tooth before extraction is recommended. Where extraction is determined to be the most appropriate course of treatment, a conversation about tooth replacement options may also form part of the planning discussion, as not all patients will require or choose replacement and this is assessed on a case by case basis. At Primary Dental, extractions are performed following a thorough clinical assessment, with a focus on patient comfort, clear communication, and safe aftercare.

What to expect
1. Treatment planning and informed consent
Your dentist will explain the extraction procedure, the approach to pain management, expected recovery, and where relevant, tooth replacement options that may be worth considering for your situation. Informed consent is obtained before treatment proceeds.
2. Extraction procedure
Local anaesthetic is applied to ensure the area is numb and comfortable before the procedure begins. The tooth is loosened and removed from its socket. More complex cases, including impacted teeth, may require a surgical approach.
3. Aftercare and recovery
Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to support healing and reduce the risk of complications. Follow-up appointments may be recommended, and where appropriate, a conversation about tooth replacement options can be had once healing is underway.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

FAQs
Will I need to replace the extracted tooth?
Not necessarily. Whether tooth replacement is recommended depends on the location of the tooth, the health of the surrounding teeth and jaw bone, and your individual circumstances. A tooth at the back of the mouth may have less impact on function and appearance than one in a more visible or load-bearing position. Your dental practitioner will discuss whether replacement is clinically appropriate for your situation and can outline the options available if you wish to explore them. There is no obligation to proceed with replacement, and the decision is made collaboratively based on your preferences and clinical needs.
Is tooth extraction painful?
Local anaesthetic is used to numb the area before and during the procedure. Some pressure is normal, but significant pain should not be experienced. Post-procedure discomfort is common and can typically be managed with guidance from your dental team.
How long does recovery take?
Recovery time varies depending on the complexity of the extraction. Many patients feel well within a few days following a straightforward removal. Surgical extractions may require a longer recovery. Your dental professional will provide guidance suited to your individual case.
What should I avoid after a tooth extraction?
You may be advised to avoid smoking, alcohol, vigorous rinsing, using a straw, and hard or crunchy foods during initial healing. These activities can increase the risk of complications such as dry socket or delayed healing.
What is dry socket?
Dry socket occurs when the blood clot that forms in the extraction site is dislodged or dissolves prematurely before healing is complete. It can cause increased pain and delayed recovery. Following your aftercare instructions carefully helps reduce the risk. Contact your dental team promptly if pain increases in the days following your procedure.
Can smoking affect healing after a tooth extraction?
Smoking and vaping may significantly increase the risk of complications including dry socket and infection, and can delay healing. Your dental professional will provide guidance on how to support the safest possible recovery.
