What is Wisdom Teeth Removal?
Wisdom teeth removal is a common dental procedure used to address wisdom teeth that are impacted, difficult to clean, causing pain, or contributing to infection or damage to nearby teeth. Wisdom teeth (third molars) often emerge in late teens or early adulthood and may not have enough space to come through properly. At Primary Dental, wisdom tooth removal is provided following a clinical assessment and appropriate imaging to ensure the safest approach, with a strong focus on patient comfort and clear aftercare guidance.

What to expect
1. Consultation and assessment
A dental professional will assess symptoms, check the position of your wisdom teeth, and review your oral and medical history. X-rays may be taken to evaluate tooth roots and surrounding structures.
2. Treatment planning
Your dentist will confirm whether removal is recommended and explain the procedure, comfort measures, expected healing time, and aftercare. Referral to an oral surgeon may be recommended for complex cases.
3. Wisdom tooth removal
Removal is performed using appropriate pain control (such as local anaesthetic). The method depends on the position of the tooth and whether it is fully erupted or impacted.
4. Aftercare and recovery
You will receive instructions to support healing, manage discomfort, and reduce the risk of complications. Follow-up appointments may be recommended depending on the case.

I’ve been to many dental centres in Sydney and I must say this is one of the best dental service I’ve experienced. The location is so convenient, only 2 min walk from Town Hall. Staffs are supper friendly and gentle. They also offer very affordable price and you can pay with afferpay or zippay, which is amazing! Will definitely be back!

I do enjoy the friendly and helpful staff, it’s makes all the difference. I will be the first to admit the dentist is my least favourite place to go however after my first visit for a general check up, I felt very confident and pleased with my appointment from Dr Brett Moore. He is compassionate and caring :)

FAQs
Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?
No. Not all wisdom teeth need removal. If they are healthy, fully erupted, and easy to clean, they may be monitored instead. Removal is typically recommended when wisdom teeth are impacted or causing problems.
How do I know if my wisdom teeth are causing issues?
Common symptoms can include pain at the back of the mouth, swelling, tenderness, difficulty opening the mouth, bad breath, or recurring gum infection around the tooth. An assessment and X-ray can confirm the cause.
I’m nervous about wisdom teeth removal — what can I expect?
It’s completely normal to feel anxious about wisdom tooth removal. Your dental team will explain the procedure in advance, discuss pain control options, and provide clear aftercare instructions. We aim to support patient comfort throughout treatment and ensure you feel informed and reassured at every step.
Is wisdom teeth removal painful?
Local anaesthetic is used to reduce pain during the procedure. Some discomfort and swelling after treatment is normal and can usually be managed with aftercare advice and appropriate pain relief guidance.
How long does wisdom tooth recovery take?
Healing time varies. Many patients return to normal activities within a few days, but full healing may take longer depending on the complexity of the removal. Your dentist will provide realistic recovery guidance.
What should I avoid after wisdom tooth removal?
You may be advised to avoid smoking, alcohol, vigorous rinsing, drinking through a straw, and hard foods during the initial healing period. These can increase the risk of complications such as dry socket.
Can smoking affect healing after wisdom teeth removal?
Yes. Smoking (and vaping) may increase the risk of complications and delayed healing, including dry socket. Your dental professional will provide guidance to support the safest recovery.
